Vermont track hopes to repair Irene damage with trees from “Clean Air Project”
DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Devil’s Bowl Speedway is going green again. The host site of the prestigious “Spring Green” stock car race has been selected to receive a grant from the NASCAR Green initiative and will plant trees in Vermont as part of the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project. The announcement was made during a conference for NASCAR Home Tracks promoters at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL on Saturday, February 16.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway was one of five NASCAR Home Tracks selected for the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project, joining Ohio’s Lake County Speedway, Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway, Pennsylvania’s Lake Erie Speedway, and Myrtle Beach (SC) Speedway. The NASCAR Green Clean Air Project debuted in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009 and expanded to include the NASCAR Home Tracks program in 2011. (more…)
Rookie Driver Becomes First Woman to Win a Sprint Cup Series Pole; Gordon Secures Outside Pole
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Danica Patrick made NASCAR history on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway by winning the pole for the 55th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24.
Patrick, driving the No. 10 Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing, turned a fast lap of 196.434 mph around the 2.5-mile tri-oval to become the first woman to win a pole for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.
“It’s really amazing how much effort is put into a qualifying car for Daytona and really only the front row is what sticks for Sunday,” Patrick said. “It’s nice that all that hard work can pay off and that we can give ourselves that opportunity to lead the pack down into the tri-oval for the green flag of the Daytona 500.”
Patrick’s pole tops the previous best starting position for a female in the Daytona 500, which was 18th by Janet Guthrie in 1980. She is also the first rookie to win the Daytona 500 pole since Jimmie Johnson in 2002.
Coming off a successful inaugural season, the Granite State Pro Stock Series continues to grow into their second season, announcing two awards that will be given out at each event.
The first award will be the Ricky’s Real Racer Award, which will award the driver that improves his position the most from the start to finish $150. This award is in memory of Ricky Miller, who passed in October of 2004. Ricky was best known as a “Racers Racer”.
“We wanted to do something in Ricky’s memory,” his dad, Donnie Miller said. “Ricky was never a points racer. He was a driver that did everything he could to get to the front.” While not a points racer, Ricky will be forever known as the final track champion at the now defunct Riverside Park Speedway. NAPLES, ME (January 31) – There’s something about Florida in February that’s been attracting the best drivers in racing for the better part of a century. From the “North Turn” at Daytona’s world famous beach to short tracks stretching from the Panhandle to Miami, racers have flocked to the Sunshine State every winter. And 2013 will be no different. Florida’s “big race” season is set to begin in just over a week as some of the best of the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) make the trek down to Auburndale Speedway for the Winter Meltdown. The first PASS National Series race of the year is attracting Super Late Model drivers from all over North America in the hopes of wrestling the checkered flag away from the top short track hot shoes in Florida.
PASS North will be represented well by a trio of young drivers joining two-time PASS National Series Champion Ben Rowe in making the long trip down South. D.J. Shaw, Kyle Desousza, and Joey Doiron have all found success racing in New England’s top short track series. Shaw is coming off a successful return to the PASS North Series in 2012 that saw him score two wins and finish third in points. Evidence that the Precision JLM/Mulkern Excavating team could be poised for a PASS National Championship this year. (more…)
