The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) will kick off it’s twelfth northeast racing season on Saturday May 5 at Scarborough Maine’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, and its an event that racers and race fans alike have looked forward to since the final checker of 2011. Southern Maine Motors.com has returned as presenting sponsors for all three PASS appearances at the Cusack’s immaculate speed plant
PASS North’s three touring series are slated for competition, and all three series defending champions will be back to try and duplicate their 2011 titles.
Johnny Clark captured the super late model segment of this event in 2011 on his way to an unprecedented sixth PASS super late model title. The Farmingdale Maine speedster won seven of the series’s fourteen 2011 events and only landed outside the top five on one occasion. He’ll be looking for a fifth straight championship when the season wraps up in October, but on opening day every team is tied in the point standings and there are plenty of drivers who’d like nothing better than to break Clark’s streak.

Race leader Peltier breaks with three to go, Kenseth capitalizes
Ross Kenseth proved Saturday night at the Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, North Carolina that in racing sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Kenseth scored his first career PASS South Series win as he passed Preston Peltier who experienced a broken left front lower control arm with just three laps remaining, winning the Orange Blossom Special 150.
Kenseth, who entered the event fifth in championship standings, showed he had a fast car before the green flag dropped on the 150 lap race as he set fast time during series qualifying earlier in the day. After the redraw of the top fastest qualifiers that took time in the twenty-six car starting field Kenseth would be shuffled back to fifth and Gray Gaulding was the lucky driver to lead the field to green.

There’s a reason the PASS South Series has scheduled two races a year at the Orange County Speedway every year since 2008. The racing the 3/8th mile facility located in Rougemont, North Carolina has been unmatched compared to other facilities that the series has raced at over the years. This has lead to competitive car counts and stellar crowds, and the 2012 edition of the Orange Blossom Special looks to be no different.
One of the main reasons for the quality racing is the unique banking that not only occurs through the turns but down the straight-aways as well. This allows for side by side racing with cars fanning out from high to low through the corners before being forced to work it all out without and drag race their way down the straight-aways. More often than not a mental breakdown by a driver who has had to race two and three wide for a long period of time is what breeds trouble on the racetrack.
