CHARLOTTE, NC (May 27) – In recent days, citizens of the United States have observed one of our Nation’s most somber holidays, Memorial Day. Each year at this time we recognize the brave men and women who have fought for our freedom and those who paid the ultimate price with their life. This weekend the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) will conclude the Memorial Day week with the inaugural running of the Salute Our Heroes 150 at the Coastal Plains Raceway near Jacksonville, NC. All military personnel from any branch of the United States Armed Forces attending Saturday night’s race will only pay $10 for a ticket to see some of the best short track racing in North America. For those not familiar with the area you might ask why PASS chose Coastal Plains Raceway to host the Salute Our Heroes 150. Well, the track is less than 20 minutes from the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejuene and Marine Corps Air Station New River. Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station is located just up the coast from Jacksonville and less than two hours away one can find the Army’s Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, NC. And, that’s why the race is called the Salute Our Heroes 150. That way PASS can salute heroes from all branches of the military, active or retired.
“We felt like this was a great way for us to honor those who have done so much for our country,” said PASS President Tom Mayberry. “Coastal Plains Raceway is in a great location to put on this type of event and our brand of racing with double-file restarts and lots of action is our small way of giving something back to our heroes.”
The Salute Our Heroes 150 has all the makings of a classic. This weekend’s race will not only mark the first trip for the PASS South Super Late Models to Coastal Plains Raceway, but will also mark the first time a Super Late Model car of any type has ever been on the track since it opened in 1999. And, Coastal Plains should present a unique challenge to the talented drivers of PASS. The track is a wide, 4/10 mile oval that will present plenty of opportunities for passing and side-by-side racing. The most unique aspect of Coastal Plains is the double-dog leg on the front straightaway. Looking at an aerial view of the track, Coastal Plains looks like a shorter version of Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
PASS South points leader Ben Rowe will lead the charge to Coastal Plains fresh off a PASS North win this past weekend at White Mountain Motorsports Park in New Hampshire. However, young Ryan Blaney and veterans Heath Hindman and Preston Peltier look to slow Rowe down and tighten the gap in the PASS South standings. Justin Wakefield, Jay Fogleman, and Mark Gibson were all championship favorites coming into the season and with strong runs of late they hope to use the Salute Our Heroes 150 as a springboard to the second half of the 2009 season. Rookies Tayla Orleans and Devin Jones have shown a tremendous amount of talent in their first season of PASS South racing and with a little luck both could find themselves with a chance of winning as early as this weekend.
The Salute Our Heroes 150 will also see its fair share of new and returning drivers to the PASS South Series “Big” Jim Kelley and Shelton McNair, Jr. have nearly 50 years of experience between them and call the coast of North Carolina home. Kelley and McNair have turned countless laps racing Super Late Models throughout the Southeast from the legendary Big 10 Series at Concord Speedway to winter racing in Florida during Speedweeks. However, they’ve never competed against one another at Coastal Plains. Kelley has raced and won at Coastal Plains in a Limited Late Model, but McNair has never raced at the track just south of his home in Plymouth, NC. Another former Big 10 standout Hal Goodson returns to PASS South after work commitments kept his team away from the most recent PASS South race at Wake County Speedway. Goodson will definitely be a contender at Coastal Plains after scoring two top ten finishes in the first three races of the season.
Last year, John Stancill shocked the short track racing world charging from 26th to finish 3rd in his first PASS South Super Late Model start at Hickory Motor Speedway’s Easter Bunny 150. Stancill would go on to just miss out on the PASS National Championship finishing second in the standings to Cassius Clark. In 2009, Stancill has ventured out looking for other racing opportunities, but returns to PASS South this weekend at Coastal Plains with more PASS races scheduled for the second half of the season.
“I’m really excited to be racing, especially at Jacksonville,” said Stancill. “It seems like I’ve had a lot of bad luck this year, I’ve had problems getting my motors ready and we just didn’t want to rush things so we opted out of the first few races. I took the car to Hickory a few weeks ago to shake it down and it seemed pretty good so I’m really anxious to race it.”
Corey Williams and Ryan Moore will make their first starts with PASS South since competing in the Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory. Both drivers cut their teeth racing in Maine and have since relocated to North Carolina. Williams is the all time PASS South wins leader with four victories and finished second in the 2008 PASS South point standings. Moore is a former winner in the NASCAR Camping World East Series and is the son of Kelly Moore.
Also returning to PASS South this weekend will be veteran competitor Tim Pinion and newcomer Joey Coulter. Pinion has a new car and a new attitude and is looking forward to making his first start of the season. Coulter has been dabbling in everything from Late Model Stock cars to ARCA and tried to make the Easter Bunny 150, but was sidelined with engine problems during practice.
The Salute Our Heroes 150 will have a stout under card in addition to the PASS South Super Late Models filled out by the PASS Late Model Trucks, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks. Through four PASS Late Model Truck races, Grant Davidson is on a three race win streak. Those finishes have given Davidson a slight edge in points over Ben Ebeling and Clint King, who has finished second in the last two races. Michael Cooper led several laps at Orange County until tire problems dropped him to a third place finish. This weekend, veterans Joe Heigl, Marty Griggs, and rookie Justin Crider look to end Davidson’s winning ways. The PASS Late Model Truck count should increase this weekend following the announcement from PASS that competitors new to the series had the option to purchase four new tires or could race on two new tires and two scuffed tires. The PASS Late Model Trucks have had a total of 21 drivers compete with the new series and will take a break following the race at Coastal Plains. The next PASS Late Model Truck race will be on Sunday, July 5th at the Hickory Motor Speedway.
Action gets under way this weekend on Friday, May 29th at Coastal Plains Raceway with pit gates opening at 2:30 PM and rotating practice for all divisions from 4 PM to 7 PM. On Saturday, May 30th, pit gates open at 11:30 AM, with rotating practice for all divisions from 2:30 PM to 4:45 PM, qualifying will be at 5 PM, and racing will start at 6:45 PM. Hudson, NH – Two first time winners capped off a exciting day of racing last Sunday at Hudson Speedway with Chris Kuebler winning the V-6 Modified feature and John Morin Jr. taking home the winners hardware in the Rookie Stocks.
After a brief rain delay during the heat races, the Thunder Lite youth division was first on the pavement for their feature race. Tyler Hatch made quick work of the cars in front of him from his third row starting spot and took the lead by lap three. Dylan Bilodeau followed Hatch up through traffic and settled in second chasing Hatch. With Hatch stretching his lead, Sammy Gilman moved into third. At the strip it was Hatch, Bilodeau, Gilman, Gage Harron and Jen Lord the top five.
Twenty Four Classic Lites drove under starter Bob Munroe’s green flag with Paul Colson leading the first 6 laps from his pole position on the starting grid. Billy Ryder Jr. took the top spot from him on a restart and held the point till Eric Bacon took the spot from him. Ryder Jr. spun a few laps later bringing out the caution. Jeremy Wilcox took over second on the restart but was no match for Bacon, the top two ran that way till the checkers fell with Ryder Jr. recovering from his spin to finish third. Jon Provost, Paul Colson, Jeff Miller, Steve Dickey, Eddie Gilman, Jeff Gilman and Dennis O’Brien rounded out the top ten.
Chris Kuebler took the V-6 Modifieds to the green and held on for his first ever feature win but it wasn’t easy as he was challenged early on by J.R. Gorman who got outside of him a few times and then nearing the end of the race Allen Reiser came charging at Kuebler. Reiser got a run on Kuebler coming off turn two on the final circuit, but Kuebler closed the door going down the back stretch and held on for the win. Reiser, Dick Dubois, Gorman and Keith Caruso were the top five.
Jef James took his second win in a row in the Roadrunners after early race leader Louis Maher, who had a commanding lead, exited with mechanical problems at the halfway point. Eric Bebeault had an impressive run coming in second with Patrick D’Alba third, John Pilvelis fourth and Bruce Knowles fifth.
Like Kuebler in the Modifieds, Morin Jr. took advantage of his pole starting spot but wasn’t challenged till the closing laps with two time Rookie Stock champ Scotty Duval reeling him in.
On the final lap, with heavy traffic in front of the top two, Duval caught Morin Jr. Coming off the final turn it was a drag race with Morin Jr beating Duval by inches. Larry Fortin, Dan Murphy and Andy Nichols rounded out the top five
John Griffith won the Flagpole race, Ron Lord won the Spectator Race and Derrick Poutre won the Spectator one on one drags.
Next race is Sunday May 31st at 1 pm featuring Outlaw Sportsman, V-6 Modifieds, Rookie Stocks, Roadrunners, Thunder Lights, Spectator Race, Spectator one on ones drags and the always exciting Flagpole race.

Hersey Cruises to Victory Lane
Winchester, NH: This past Saturday, Monadnock Speedway hosted the return of the Northeast Midget Association where 2008 champion Cabral took the checkers for their opening event of the 2009 season. Hersey cruised to the victory in the Outlaw Pros. Matt Mead made a late race pass in the Super Stocks to take his third victory, Tim Jackson was declared the winner in the Mini Stocks and Jeff Kirley took the Full Size Enduro win.
The Mini Stocks rolled onto the track with Travis Grover leading the field to the green. On lap six the leader and Joe Rogers came together collecting Beth Adams and Shawn Doubleday. On the restart, Jamey King was the new leader as Derek Bergquist followed. Rich Fournier and Tim Jackson battled side by side for third. Ten laps into the books, King and Bergquist were bumper to bumper for the lead as Chris McTaggart sat in fifth. Half way to go, the battle continued between King and Bergquist as Jackson looked to the inside of Fournier for third. McTaggart and Kim Rivet challenged each other for fifth. Five laps to go Jackson ran third as Rivet tried the outside in turn four for fifth. Two laps to go, Bergquist looked high and low to get around King as McTaggart moved into fourth. At the checkers, it was Bergquist making the pass on King for the win followed by Jackson, McTaggart and Fournier. In a post race inspection, Bergquist and King were penalized for a rules infraction giving the win to Tim Jackson.
Ken Thomspon set the pace in the Super Stock main event. At the green, Thompson quickly took the lead followed by Craig Cashman, Adam Brooks, Robert Bedaw and Andy Brooks. By lap five, Adam Brooks moved into second as Andy Brooks and Ed Brehio Jr followed close behind. On lap seven, Adam Brooks took over the lead as Thompson was shuffled back to fourth. Lap ten, Adam Brooks continued to lead as Andy Brooks and Brehio III battled for second. Bedaw, Matt Mead, Thopmson and Ken Springer all ran tight for the top five spots. Two laps later, the caution came out as Andy Brooks bounced off the wall and made contact with Brehio III. Brehio III suffered extensive damage to his car and was forced to retire to the pits. On the restart, Adam Brooks held off Mead for the lead as Springer and Bedaw ran side by side for third. Five laps to go, Adam Brooks continued to lead despite many challenges from Mead for the pass in turn three. Jeff Wright moved into fifth attempting to make the pass on Bedaw. On the final lap, Mead tried the outside pass in turn two as both Adam Brooks and Mead came out of turn four side by side for the checkered flag. At the checkers, it was Mead by a fender for the victory followed by Adam Brooks, Springer, Bedaw and Wright.
Steve Gauthier and Mike Parks, side by side, led the Outlaw Pros to the green. Gauthier, after posting a DNF last week due to a broken wheel, took the lead. Parks settled in second followed by last week’s winner Brandon Ovitt. On lap five, Russ Hersey turned up the heat and looked to the inside of Ovitt for third. Hersey completed the pass. By lap ten, Parks felt Hersey on his back bumper. Hersey made the pass under Parks and moved in on the leader. By the next lap, Hersey on the inside of Gauthier in turn three gained the lead. Half way to go, Hersey began to pull away from the field as Parks defended his third spot from Ovitt and Barry Gray. Three laps later, Parks gets loose out of turn three allowing a side by side battle with Ovitt for third. Ten laps to go, Ovitt was driving the wheels off his car to catch Gauthier for second. On lap thirty five, Hersey on cruise control began to show smoke due to a problem with his power steering. Ovitt caught up to Gauthier as Smith took over fourth from Gray. At the end, it was Hersey hanging despite problems for the win followed by Gauthier, Ovitt, Smith and Gray.
The Full Size Enduros completed the evening’s event With Jared Edson being scored as the early leader followed by Randy Rameau, Bill Faford, Duane Stonier and Trevor Dyer for the top five. On lap six, Rameau took the lead as Jeff Kirley moved into fourth and was hunting down the top three. Rameau continued to lead through heavy lap traffic allowing Edson to catch him. Half way to go, a three way battle developed between Rameau, Edosn and Kirley for the lead. Kirley made the pass on Edson winning the side by challenge and placed pressure on Rameau. Kirley on the outside took the lead from Rameau. Kirley stretched out his lead as Edson and Rameau battled for second. Bill Faford and Dan Yagmin fought for fourth. Ten laps to go, Jared took back second as Yagmin moved into third. Ryan Rivet and Bill Faford challenged each other for the top five. On the final lap, it was Kirley followed by Edson, Yagmin, Rameau and Duane Stonier.

Epping, NH – Saturday Night Thunder returned to the All-Star Speedway last Saturday night, with the All-Star Modifieds headlining the program once again.
George Baldwin of Lowell, MA scored his first career victory in the 40-lap main event, taking the lead from polesitter Kurt Vigeant at the drop of the green, and never looking back on his way to victory.
Eric Hudson, Joe Lemay, and Brandee Tree all took a shot at Baldwin along the way, but all had late-race problems and finished off the pace. Baldwin had to withstand one final challenge, which came from Todd Annarummo in a two-lap shootout to the checkers.
Baldwin held on for the last two circuits, flashing under Mike Walker’s checkered flag to score the win. Annarummo settled for runner-up, with J.R. Baril, Sumner Scott, and Vigeant the rest of the top five.
The Super Streets contested a 50-lap main event, with rookies Sulo Burbank and “Racin’ Jason” Ferreira leading the field to the green flag. Burbank quickly moved out to take the lead, while Ferreira found trouble and spun just three laps in, and had to restart at the rear.
Burbank held on to the lead for the first eleven laps, but he lost the top spot to the hard-charging Nick Gravel on lap 12, and Gravel immediately began to pull away from the field.
By halfway, Ferreira had worked his way back up to second, but there was no stopping Gravel this time out. At the checkers, it was Gravel rolling into victory lane for the second time this season, with Ferreira taking home a solid runner-up. Steve “Pinball” Wilmot, Sam Pirazzo, and Gary Beauregard closed out the top five.
Former Enduro standout Mark Parenteau scored his first career win in the Strictly Stock main, racing off to the win after picking up the point when Keith Walton blew up while leading on lap 18.
Parenteau had led the first four circuits before giving up the top spot to Walton, but when he got the lead back, it was his for the rest of the race. With a tight battle behind him for the second spot, Parenteau led the balance of the event to pick up the win.
Chris Augevich held off a tough challenge from the previous race winner, Mike Williams, to finish in the second spot, with Keith Ennis taking fourth and Randy Carmichael rounding out the top five.
Josh King took down his second Fast-4 feature win of the season on Saturday night, outrunning Joey Fernandez to grab the victory. “Uncle Dana” Sullivan put on the show of the night, finishing the race third despite running the last several laps minus his left-rear wheel.

PASS North: Rowe Rocks White Mountain
North Woodstock NH (May 23) Ben Rowe knows his way around White Mountain Motorsports Park. The four time Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model Champion now has eight PASS North feature wins at the tidy high banked quarter mile after an exciting battle for the race lead with Travis Benjamin. Benjamin and Rowe got together on lap 135 of the 150 lap feature, and when the smoke cleared Rowe was out front and Benjamin was spun out in the infield.
It was all Rowe for the final fifteen laps, despite challenges from second place finisher Derek Ramstom and Richie Dearborn, who came home third. Chris Staples and Adam Bates were fourth and fifth, series point leader Johnny Clark sixth and Benjamin raced his way back to finish seventh. Donnie Whitten, Donnie Lashua and DJ Shaw completed the top ten. Thirteen cars finished on the leap lap.
Kelly Moore led early from the pole, challenged by Richie Dearborn and Cassius Clark. Clark took over second on lap 37 and Tony Ricci was looking strong in third until a lap 51 caution for Dave Farrington and Mike Thomas’ spins saw a tight pack of front runners get together trying to get slowed up for the yellow. Cassius Clark was a victim, as was Ricci.
The lineup was jumbled with Moore still in command but Benjamin now sat in second, Ramstrom all the way up to 3rd from 15th on the grid, Ben Rowe fourth. and Adam Bates fifth. Benjamin took over the top spot, and Rowe raced past Ramstrom and Moore for second. Meanwhile, Benjamin ran away and hid from the field, building up a straightaway lead until the caution flew on lap 74 and brought him back to the pack. Rowe took advantage on the restart and led Benjamin at the half way mark, but Benjamin had the lead back by lap 80 and the front two were pulling away from the field when the race reached the 100 lap mark.
Lap 112 saw Kelly Moore go for a wild ride after a tap from Steve Legendre sent the veteran into the backstretch wall, up and over the top of the track exit wall and flipping. Moore‘s NAPA Auto Parts Chevy came to rest on its roof over the protective jersey barriers at the end of the track exit. No one was injured, but Moore’s ride was a total loss.
After an extended red flag to attend to Moore and his race car, the field got the green once again and Rowe took the lead from Benjamin, but Benjamin battled back to retake the point on lap 123. Another restart at lap 132 produced the same results, Rowe taking off to lead from the outside front row. Again Benjamin took the battle to Rowe, fighting back on the bottom. That’s when the pair touched and Benjamin was once again denied at least a podium finish and quite possibly his first PASS win of the season.
Moore, Johnny Clark, and Donnie Whitten each claimed heat race victories.
The PASS North touring pros take a week off before returning to Speedway 660 in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada for a 200 lap battle on Saturday June 13th. Ben Rowe will head south next weekend for round five of the PASS South Super Late Model season on Saturday May 30th for the Salute Our Heroes 150 at Coastal Plains Speedway in Jacksonville North Carolina. Rowe currently holds a 22 point lead in the PASS South Super Late Model standings over Ryan Blaney. Opening day at Wiscasset Raceway presented by Lester Morse Auto Sales was a great one. The sun was shining at the 2 p.m. start time, the fans packed the stands and the drivers packed the pit area. The U.S. Army reserves where there with their massive rock climbing wall. Operation Recognition was at the “Center of Speed” where they put on a parade around the track with the Patriot Guard motorcycle riders, Maine Bag Pipes and armed service men and woman. After the parade a ceremony took place in the infield to honor folks who have served for out country. After Late Model division drivers took to the stands to collect money for the good cause that is Operation recognition with Army boots and the National Anthem had been preformed we were ready for our feature events.
The first cars to hit the track for feature event action were the Wicked Good Vintage Racers. Unlike the rest of the cars racing at Wiscasset Raceway on opening day these cars were all from the 1970’s and earlier and didn’t they put on a show. Timmy Reynolds ended up holding off Johnny Rice to pick up the feature victory with Mike Milete crossing the line in 3rd, Keith Waterhouse 4th and Norris Willette 5th.
The Aable Auto Parts Mini Stock division had some good racing up front for 20 laps of their feature event as Thomas True of Wiscasset and Ryan Ripley of Waldoboro battled it out with Kevin Douglass several car length back as he made his move back into the Mini Stock ranks after a year successful year in the Super Street division. The two youngster up front made it interesting with True beating a fellow teenager Ripley to the checkered flag with Douglass 3rd, Pete McCollett 4th and Mike Dulany rounding out the top 5.
The U.S. Cellular Mini Trucks had some every exciting side by side racing. University of Maine Engineering student Kevin Oliver battled it over all 15 laps with Harpswell’s Opie Allard with Oliver just edging Allard out for the win. Another great battle was going on behind them between Josh Harjula and Ryan Hayes. Hayes would get the advantage in that one earning his first trophy of his career. Harjula would cross the stripe 4th with Michael Anderson 5th after getting into a wreck early on in the feature.
Wiscasset’s newest division the Soule’s Auto Supply Thunderstocks took to the track for the vary first time. In this class were everybody must run a 6 cylinder fuel injected engine there was an excellent battle for the lead over the first half of the race between Bill Grover and Donnie Stuart. Grover would eventually get the advantage and the win as something look to be going amiss on the Stuart’s car but he would hang in there for 2nd.
It was an exciting battle for the lead throughout the 20 lap New England Transmissions Strictly Street feature between Ian Bresnehan of Bath and Mike Moody of Woolwich. Bresnehan had the advantage through most of the race in his sharp looking Cadillac but with just a few laps to go Moody got to the inside of Bresnehan and ended up with Win. Bresnehan came home in 2nd with Matt Stuart joining the pair in victory lane after his tremendous battle with Jamie Henderson.
The Verizon Wireless Super Street division was a good one to watch. Bernie Dinsmore jumped out to the early lead but mechanical problems forced him to the pits. There was a lot of good racing going up front between Shawn Austin, Jeremy Glasier, Brian Fortin and Allen Moeller Jr. After a couple of good battles between the four that’s the way they finished with Shawn Austin picking up the feature victory and Jeremy Glasier holding off a hard charging Brian Fortin for second. Fortin would finish 3rd with Moeller Jr. 4th and Ryan St. Clair 5th.
The 35 lap Clarks Car Crushing Pro Stock feature had Jeff Burgess holding a commanding lead early on in the event before mechanical issues forced him to retire early. After one good pass for the lead Scott Moore was out in front and that’s where he stayed for the rest of the race and picked up the win. Charlie Colby would end up 2nd with Scott King 3rd. 4th would belong to Ryan Dean and 5th would go to Joe Creamer.
The Steel’s Real Rod’s and Custom’s Late Model division 30 lap feature was full of action as Duane Love jumped out to the early lead but a distributor problem put the kibosh to chances to win on opening day. Rookie R.J. Austin then took the lead and swapped it off a few times with some other drivers. 7 time track champion Maurice Young and the man who’s going for his 3rd straight Late Model championship Chris Throne ran up front most of the afternoon but in the end it was T.J. Watson out of Cundys Harbor picking up the feature victory. Young and Thorne would finish 2nd and 3rd with Adam Chadbourne 4th and Ajay Picard 5th. The Late model division was also the division in which the this weeks Army Stron driver of the week races in. The winner of that was Tyler Robbins.
Next week at Wiscasset Raceway it is fan appreciation day with a driver autograph session on the track and it is also the first round of the Linnehan’s Credit Now Late Model Triple Crown Series. The start time is at 5 p.m. “Be There!!!”
