Teenager trying to unseat Helliwell at Rutland County track
WEST HAVEN, VT – Emily Packard is aiming for a piece of stock car racing history at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Father’s Day. The 17 year-old junior at Union 32 High School in Montpelier, VT is off to the best start of her career and now heads to her strongest track for the American-Canadian Tour’s 101.5 The Fox “Spring Green 114” event on Sunday, June 15 at 1:30 p.m. She’ll try to become the first woman to win a Late Model event at the fast Rutland County half-mile, and just the second woman in ACT history to win.
Packard has a pair of top-five ACT finishes this season and led 115 laps at Riverside (NH) Speedway last weekend. She ranks fourth in championship standings as the season reaches its halfway point at the Spring Green. Packard has also competed in weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events at Devil’s Bowl and has finished in the top five in all three events. A third-place showing in the People’s United Bank 100 two weeks ago leaves her just one point behind leader Josh Masterson in the track’s title chase.

Late Model checkers to Bryant
WEST HAVEN, VT – Jason Durgan became a first-time winner at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Friday, June 6, taking the 30-lap Bond Auto Parts Modified event on “Facebook Friday” for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Durgan, of Morrisonville, NY, headlined a winner’s list that included Robert Bryant, Jr., Robert Gordon, Jake Noble, Scott MacMichael, and Shawn Fountain.
Durgan, who was eliminated in a crash last week, benefitted from a pole position starting spot in the 30-lap main event and led every step of the way. His No. 17 Clear Shot Satellite/Taylor Rental Teo jetted out to an early advantage, but that was wiped away with nine laps remaining as front-runners Todd Stone, Ron Proctor, and Jessey Mueller tangled. Durgan was forced to fend off Vince Quenneville, Jr., at the restart, then drove to the landmark win.

The Facebook Friday card is chock-full of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing, with qualifying and main events for the Bond Auto Parts Modified, Late Model, Renegade, and Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock divisions, the second appearance of the open-wheel SK Light class, and the season debut for the rock-‘em-sock-‘em Enduro Series. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., with the first green flag at 7:00 p.m.
“Our Facebook fans have really stepped up their participation in the last year or so. This week’s event is a way to thank them with our coupon offer,” Devil’s Bowl promoter Mike Bruno said. The track will also offer a similar promotion for the Friday, July 11 event through its Twitter handle, @DevilsBowlSpeed, with the details to be announced soon. “Our staff looks forward to the events every Friday, but a big part of our mid-week fun has been discussing and sharing ideas with our fans through social media. They’re so passionate about the racing and the drivers, and it’s very rewarding to have our audience so engaged.”
The “Facebook Friday” event on Friday, June 6 is the third event of the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. The American-Canadian Tour returns on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15 at 1:30 p.m., for the rescheduled 101.5 The Fox Spring Green.

Mueller stays hot with Modified checkers; Gordon, LaVair score
WEST HAVEN, VT – Nick Sweet continued his dominance of Vermont State Late Model Championship Series racing at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Friday night, winning the People’s United Bank 100. The defending Vermont State Champion has now won in his last three visits to the Rutland County track. His victory headlined a list of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series winners on the night that also included Jessey Mueller, Robert Gordon, and Chris LaVair.
Sweet, of Barre, VT, made up for a bitter defeat just five days earlier in the Vermont State Championship opener at his hometown track, Thunder Road, by leading every lap of the People’s United Bank 100. Starting from the pole position by virtue of a field-high “+6” position gain in qualifying, Sweet stretched out to comfortable lead for much of the race. A pair of 17 year-olds in Brandon Atkins and Emily Packard didn’t let Sweet take the win easily, however.
