Harrington takes Coupe win, Viets under observation after frightening crash
Kevin Chaffee of Fairlee, VT started Bear Ridge Speedway’s 45th stock car racing season off with historic double victories at the KDD NAPA of Bradford season opener on Saturday. “The Fairlee Flier” swept both the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified and USAC Dirt Midget Association victories to begin the year.
With each of the 99ROCK Weekly Racing Series divisions running twin-segment, cumulatively-scored events, Chaffee posted finishes of fourth and first in the Modified class for a total low score of five points. With a slingshot move past Sprint Cup teammate Kyle Busch five laps into overtime, Joey Logano won Saturday afternoon’s Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
In a race that saw Eric McClure injured and Danica Patrick using her Chevrolet for payback, Logano beat Busch to the finish line by .034 seconds to win his second NNS race of the season and the 11th of his career.
Defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ran third and took over the points lead from Elliott Sadler. Cole Whitt came home fourth, followed by his JR Motorsports teammate and boss Dale Earnhardt Jr.
BRADFORD, VT – “The Fairlee Flier,” Kevin Chaffee of Fairlee, VT was the overall winner of the 45 lap USAC Dirt Midget Association feature at Bear Ridge Speedway on Saturday. Driving for car owner Skip Matczak, Chaffee won the initial 25 lap segment and finished third in the 20 lap second segment, which was won by Jim Mossman of Hollis, NH. No heat races were run. Drivers drew for position in the first segment and finishers in the first second were inverted in the second segment, followed by the non-finishers.
Chaffee then switched to his DIRTcar Sportsman Modified and won the 60 lap, two segment feature in that stock car class.
“What a great night this is for both of my crews and car owners,” Chaffee said. “I really appreciate the opportunity that Skip Matczak has given me with a full time ride in the Midget this year. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the coaching and mentoring from my teammates Joe Krawiec and Denny Zimmerman”. (more…)
Joey Doiron Scores 1st Career PASS Win
Berwick Driver Dominates Second Half At Beech Ridge
Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine, believed he had a car capable of winning at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. By early evening, he’d proven it to everybody else.
Doiron led the final 63 laps on Saturday afternoon to win the season-opening PASS North Series SouthernMaineMotors.com 150 at Beech Ridge. The victory was the first PASS victory for Doiron, a three-year veteran of the series.
“It’s awesome,” said Doiron, who won a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model feature at Beech Ridge in the summer of 2011. “Everyone says if you can win here, you can win anywhere. Hopefully the next 15 races we can show that.” (more…)
Middlebury Hotshoe Bates Sets Sights on NASCAR National Championship
Teenager’s long racing season begins Sunday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway
Most teenagers are just beginning to learn how to drive on the street. Not Hunter Bates – he’s racing toward a NASCAR national championship.
In between classes at Middlebury (VT) Union High School, where he is an Honor Roll student, Bates will make his first attempt at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title. His season begins on Sunday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT with the 101.5 “The Fox” Spring Green.
“We’re going for it,” Bates said with a grin. “Hopefully we can get some wins together and make a run at the national championship. I think it’s going to be fun.” (more…)
The long awaited PASS North super late model season opener at Scarborough Maine’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway gets the green this Saturday May 5th, and if the early entry list is any indication the Southern Maine Motors.com 150 is shaping up to be a barn burner.
As of Monday May 1st the pre entry list boasts thirty of the fastest full fender short track racers in the United States and Eastern Canada. The talent that has made PASS a “must see” attraction are back; Johnny Clark, Lonnie Sommerville, Ben and Mike Rowe, Cassius Clark, Kelly Moore, Scott Mulkern , Travis Bemjamin, Gary Smith, Derek Ramstrom, DJ Shaw – all past PASS feature winners and names that could stage a race amongst themselves and keep any crowd on the edge of their seat. THE STORY
FORT KENT, Maine – Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, will tackle Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., for the first time with his family-owned team in the ACT Late Model Tour Spring Green 112 on Sunday, May 6. The 18-year-old high school senior and Brad Keselowski Racing development driver has finished in the Top-10 in eight consecutive ACT races dating back to July of 2011, and he’s hoping to rebound from a tough day at Thunder Road International Speedbowl last weekend. While driving for RPM Motorsports in the 2011 Spring Green, Theriault was caught up in two separate incidents that forced him to retire early from the event after qualifying on the outside of the second row. GEORGIA, Vt. – Brian Hoar of Williston, Vt., will try and win three straight ACT Late Model Tour events for the first time in his record-breaking career, joining the series for the Spring Green 112 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., on Sunday, May 6. Hoar won the first two races of the season at Lee USA Speedway and Thunder Road International Speedbowl, respectively, to take a six-point lead in the ACT standings with eight points races remaining. The driver of the RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge now has an ACT-record 35 career victories. Excitement Builds for Inaugural VT State Championship
The first entry for the recently announced Vermont State Late Model Championship series has been received from Phil Scott, the Lt. Governor of Vermont from Berlin. The all-time win list leader at Barre’s Thunder Road and multi-time Champion is an early favorite to win the Vermont State Championship Series.
Scott is thrilled with the opportunity to compete in the series.
“I think this is a great thing for Vermont. I believe this is the first time since Catamount that our state has had two paved tracks, and it’s terrific to have a racing series ‘in house’” Scott said. “It’s very exciting. I know talking with people throughout the state many people are exciting about it, also I think it will be a lot of fun for both the fans and drivers.
