MACDONALD AND BRUN DOMINATE IN FOUR CYLINDER STOCK CAR ACTION AT CFS
(Shediac, N.B.) — Hot temperatures and hotter action on the track were the order of the day during
Battery Direct points championship stock car racing action Sunday afternoon at the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B. as the track’s Points Championship battles came down to the second last week.
Rookie Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. consolidated his points lead in the Four Fun division by recording a “Grand Slam”, taking wins in the 10-lap heat and semi-final before
outdistancing the field in the 35-lap feature. Meanwhile, Gerard Brun (#33) of Grand Barachois continued his torrid pace since returning to racing in the Mini Stock division one short week ago by also recording a “Grand Slam”, making it five wins in the six races he has competed in this season.
In Four Fun division action, MacDonald virtually assured himself of the 2011 points championship in the division with the three wins, crossing the stripe in the feature ahead of his closest rival, Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville and rookie Cody Bourque (#9) of Cap-Pelé. Bourque also took home second place hardware in both the heat and semi-final followed both times by Hall in third.
In Mini Stock action, Gerard Brun continued his winning ways in only his second week of racing this season with his three wins. Brun was first across the stripe in all three events, finishing ahead of Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane and current points leader Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap-Pelé in the feature. Bourque recorded a second place finish in the heat and a third place showing in the semi-final, while points championship runner-up Julien LeBlanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane was second in the semi and the feature to set up a very close battle next week in the chase for the 2011 Mini Stock championship.
In Super Sportsman action, 20-year veteran Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande-Digue reeled off wins in the 35-lap feature and 10-lap semi-final, indicating that this could once again be his last season at the helm of the NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet. In the feature, he crossed the stripe ahead of defending points champion Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook, who is poised to capture his second straight championship going into the final week of points competition at CFS, while Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche was third across the line. Bourgeois had earlier reeled off his third win of the season in the 10-lap heat to go along with a second place showing in the
semi.
In Shediac Sportsman action, the 2011 division championship will go down to the final weekend as defending points champion Don Marcoux (#27) of St.-Louis-de-Kent and James Smith (#50) of Riverview are tied atop the standings after Sunday’s action. Smith came into Sunday’s event with a slim 4-point lead over Marcoux who reeled off victories in the 35-lap feature, his 5th feature win of the season, along with a win in the heat and third place showing in the semi-final. Smith had to
settle for second in both the heat and semi and then suffered mechanical difficulties in the feature relegating him to a spectator from the pit area as his closest rival took the win in the main event. Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon picked up the win in the semi-final along with a third place showing in the heat while rookie Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois came home third in the feature.
Racing resumes next Sunday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. with the final points championship racing event of the season in all four CFS stock
car divisions. Next week’s action with also feature a ‘Powder Puff’ race for ladies, who are asked to register this week with CFS, as well as a ‘Mechanics Race’ where the guys who usually turn the wrenches in the pit area will get a chance to show their stuff behind the wheel of the race cars they help repair and adjust on a weekly basis.
CFS will then take a few weeks off before hosting their 12th annual Speed Weeks events, including the “Atlantic Monster Truck Nationals and Four Wheel Jamboree” on September 24th and 25th followed by the “Atlantic Stock Car Championships” on October 1st, 8th, and 9th.
