Wiscasset, ME – On Saturday, the Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour kicked off their 22nd season of racing with the first of a tour-high nine races at the fastest oval in the State of Maine, Wiscasset Speedway. With both drivers and fans eager to get to the track and put the cold, snowy winter days behind them, Opening Day 2015 promised to be a great showcase of racing action!
A healthy mix of returning veterans and rookie contenders filled the pit area, as 13 cars were on hand to get the season started. A random draw set the field for the 10-lap heat races, with the finishing positions from the heats determining the lineup for the 25-lap feature event.
Rookie Uses Bold First-Lap Move En Route To Dominating Victory
SCARBOROUGH, Maine – John Peters of Westbrook, Maine, led every lap to win the 25-lap NELCAR Legends Tour feature as part of VIP Thursday Thunder at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Thursday, July 18.
The victory was the third of the year at Beech Ridge for Peters.
“I looked in my mirror with 10 laps to go, and I saw a gray car coming – and I knew who it was,” Peters said. “I knew (the No. 59) was fast, so I got back up on the wheel. A couple more laps, and we might have had a good race for it.

WISCASSET, Maine – John Peters of Westbrook, Maine, posted back-to-back Top-10 finishes in Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour action last weekend, finishing fourth in a 25-lap event at Wiscasset Speedway in Wiscasset, Maine, on Saturday, July 6, just two days after finishing eighth in a 25-lap feature race at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine. Peters, 16, started at the rear of the field on both race days after posting podium finishes in the previous events, and he now sits fifth in the overall NELCAR standings – despite missing one race early in the season – and second in the 10-race VIP Thursday Thunder Cup standings at Beech Ridge in his rookie season on the Tour. It was a bright, warm evening at Wiscasset Speedway last Saturday. The Amsoil Nelcar Legends made their third appearance out of four scheduled this season. Also on the roster were Strictly Street, Late Model Sportsman, and an Outlaw Mini race. There were some new faces in victory lane, and their fans were there to cheer them all on.
First up was the flex race of the week, the Amsoil Nelcar Legends twenty-five lap feature. Coming into the race Ryan Hammar driving the No. 2 was points leader. Behind him in second place in point position was Mathew Bourgoine. Only ten points separated the two leaders. Prior to race time, Hammar commented, “Pretty much up to me and Mat (points). We are more on the line. We are focusing on our setups better. But, we are friends, and respectful of each other on the track. If you have the fastest car, you have the fastest car.” (more…)
