Vallee-Jonction, QC – Patrick Laperle of St-Denis-sur-Richelieu, QC makes is two Serie ACT Castrol wins in a row with his win in the Luminare Napert 150 at Autodrome Chaudiere. Laperle started from the 15th position and took the lead on lap number 44. He led the rest of the way and was not contested. Sylvain Lacombe came home second, followed closely by Donald Theetge, Karl Allard and Jean-François Déry rounding out the top five. Jonathan Desbiens, Alexandre Gingras, Patrick Cliche and Patrick Hamel finished 6th through 9th.
The 150 lap event was slowed by 14 cautions and 1 red flag period. The red flag came on lap 115 when Justin Holtom was struck by Dany Ouellet after stopping on the back stretch. Twenty-four cars started the race and fifteen were on the track for the checkered flag.
Laperle has now won three races in the 2009 Serie ACT Castrol and is already qualified for the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 19.
The next Serie ACT Castrol event is Saturday, August 22 at Riverside Speedway in St-Croix Quebec. It will be a 150 lap event and the final event before the Showdown at Chaudiere All-Star race featuring the top 11 Serie ACT Castrol drivers versus the top 11 ACT Tour drivers on Saturday, August 29 at Autodrome Chaudiere.

BARRE, VT – The 50th Anniversary Season Celebration at Thunder Road International Speedbowl will continue with next week’s doubleheader. The action will begin on Thursday, August 13th with Vermont ACE Hardware Dealers Night featuring the Tiger Sportsmen Tri-State Series 100. It will be the third and final event on the Tri-State Series 2009 schedule. The Late Models, Street Stocks and Junkyard Warriors are also on the stock car racing card. Post time is set for 6:30pm.
The doubleheader will continue on Friday, August 14th with the Pepsi Night make-up event. Fans that bring their ticket stubs from the Thursday night event will receive an admission discount on Friday (Adults $5, Kids under 12 free). Immediately following the racing will be a 50’s/60’s sock hop, costume contest and hoola-hoop contest. All fans are invited down to the pit area for the festivities and 50 cent drinks and hot dogs from Al’s concession stand. Post time is 6:00pm.
The season is winding down so don’t miss out on all the fun next Thursday and Friday at Thunder Road International Speedbowl.
Also this Sunday, August 9th is the 25th Annual M&M Beverage Enduro rescheduled from August 2nd. Over 100 cars have already entered, including Barre Mayor Thom Lauzon. Come watch 250 laps of mayhem with the winner walking away $5,000 richer. Post time is 6:00pm.

Thompson, CT (August 6, 2009): A strong crowd filed into the Thompson International Speedway for a Thursday night jam-packed with NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action. In a twin bill for the Sunoco Modifieds, Ted Christopher of Plainville, CT, and Todd Ceravolo of Gales Ferry, CT, each scored victories in the 50-lappers. George Bessette of Danbury, CT, broke into victory lane for his first of the season in the Super Late Models.
Tommy O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, made it look easy with his victory in the Late Models. Scott Sundeen of Douglas, MA, earned his second of the season in the Limited Sportsman division while Brian Sullivan of S. Windsor, CT, took down his fourth TIS Modified win of the season. Tim Taylor of Wauregan, CT, continued his domination of the Mini Stock division with his sixth win of the 2009 season.
Ted Christopher of Plainville, CT, was the first to cross under the checkers to score the victory in the opener for the Sunoco Modifieds. The veteran took it all in stride and even with a little humor when he was greeted with a barrage of boos in victory lane.
After a failed attempt at a start, Rowan Pennink grabbed the lead on the opening lap but immediately felt the pressure from Jimmy Blewett. Point leader Woody Pitkat stalled on a restart on lap 6, after a caution for Andy Gaspar, to bring out the events second caution. Pitkat was able to rejoin the tail end of the field.
Blewett was the new leader to complete lap six. The second spot was being hotly contested by Pennink, Danny Cates, Ted Christopher, and Keith Rocco. The top ten ran nose to tail. Rocco had made his way into the second spot by lap 10. The best battle was for the third spot between Pennink, Malone, Christopher and Cates. Tim Sullivan had joined the mix as well. On lap 13, Rocco began to look low on Blewett. Things settled down with Pennink in third followed by Malone, Christopher, and Cates.
On lap 16 the caution flew when the #47 of Carl Oberg came to rest against the outside wall in turn three. The restart shuffled the running order slightly but not for Blewett and Rocco. A melee on the backstretch that involved Andrew Charron, Wayne Arute, Andrew Dzenkowski, Frank Hirt III, and Andy Gaspar slowed the action.
Pennink found some running room in the outside lane motoring back into the second spot on the restart. Malone followed through into third ahead of Rocco. A spin by Harry Rheaume slowed the action once again. Blewett was shuffled back after the restart. Pennink held the top spot momentarily before giving way to Malone. The top three positions were now occupied by Malone, Christopher, and Pennink. Cates was back on the charge; moving into the third spot at halfway.
Back up front, Christopher got up along side Malone. Christopher put his #00 in the top spot just after halfway. Pitkat entered the mix joining the battle for the fourth position with the likes of Pennink and Rocco. Rocco passed Pennink and into fourth. During a long green flag run, Christopher and Malone were able to edge away from Cates in third.
The caution flew on lap 35 when Eric Goodale lost a motor spinning in his own fluid. Under the caution Pitkat and Pennink both hit pit road for service. Christopher resumed his place at the head of the pack once back under green. Cates slipped back on the restart allowing the top three of Christopher, Malone and Rocco to break away. Rocco was looking racy in second. With ten laps remaining Pitkat had worked his way into the fifth spot. Blewett ran in sixth.
In the closing stages the top three ran nose to tail with a half straightaway advantage over Cates, who enjoyed a comfortable advantage over Pitkat. On the final two laps the top three began to jockey for position. Malone peaked low on Christopher, who had to settle for second. Rocco pushed Malone underneath the white flag. Christopher was able to take down the win narrowly over Malone, Rocco, Cates, and Pitkat.
Through the generosity of Independent Truck Service of Shrewsbury, MA, who put up an extra $2,000 up on Thursday night, five drivers, who were randomly selected by a drawing of finishing positions before the start of the race, received a $200 bonus after their performance in the opening event. Danny Cates, Glenn Griswold, Jodi Johnson, Todd Ceravolo and Andrew Dzenkowski were each beneficiaries of the bonus.
Todd Ceravolo completely turned his night around going from a DNF in the opener to the winner of the night capper for the Sunoco Modifieds. Pennink once again brought the field to the green flag. Right away he had his hands full with Malone and Ceravolo. Christopher was making his way toward the front from deeper in the pack as Rocco was motoring into the lead.
Rocco edged out to a three-car length advantage over a heated battle for second between Pennink and Ceravolo. Christopher had passed Malone for fourth and immediately reeled in the battle for second. It quickly became a three car battle for the position. Ceravolo got underneath Pennink on lap 16 to move into second. Christopher followed suit putting Pennink back to fourth. Rocco continued to lead but Ceravolo looked to be catching him as they entered lapped traffic.
With the crossed flags in the air at the flag stand, Ceravolo made a slingshot move entering turn three to take the lead away. At halfway, Ceravolo led Rocco, Christopher, Pennink, in a distant fourth, Malone, Danny Cates, Pitkat, Tim Sullivan, Jimmy Blewett, and Harry Rheaume inside the top ten.
Ceravolo began to build an advantage over an emerging battle between Rocco and Christopher. Christopher dove low on Rocco in turn two on lap 32 to gain the second position. Once free of Rocco, Christopher, little by little chopped into Ceravolo’s lead. The remainder of the top ten was strung out throughout the Speedway.
The final run to the checkers was smooth sailing for Ceravolo, who earned his first win of the season since Icebreaker Sunday back in April. Christopher capped off a great night with a runner-up finish. Rocco settled for a pair of third place finishes on the night. Pennink and Sullivan completed the top five.
Ceravolo once again received one of the Independent Truck Services bonuses for his efforts in the second feature. Woody Pitkat, Harry Rheaume, Carl Oberg, and Eric Goodale each also received a $200 bonus.
George Bessette made quick work of the early leader Jay Macedonio to take over the top spot. Bessette immediately began to stretch his lead. Rick Fuller had maneuvered his way into the second position but could not bite into Bessette’s lead.
Mike O’Sullivan picked his way through traffic and into the third position. It was not an easy ride to the front as the right read fender was flapping in the breeze. Officials deemed the car safe for competition. Jeff Connors ran alone in third. Mired deeper in the pack the likes of Norm Wrenn, Derek Ramstrom worked tirelessly to make tracks to the front. The duo of Wrenn and Ramstrom caught Connors making it a three-car battle for the fourth spot.
The first caution of the event flew with only five laps remaining when Dave Silvia lost the handle making hard contact with the inside retaining wall. The caution erased the large lead that Bessette had amassed. Bessette was up for the challenge and immediately put some distance between himself and Fuller. The run was for naught as contact between Connors and Wrenn for the fourth caused Connors to spin and the caution to wave. Wrenn was penalized for the contact. Unphased by the caution, Bessette cruised out to the lead once again and ultimately to the checkers. Fuller settled for second over O’Sullivan, Ramstrom, and Macedonio.
Tommy O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, took the lead and would never be headed en route to his second win of the season. The early going featured a fierce battle between Mark Oliveira and O’Sullivan. After a side-by-side battle, O’Sullivan took over the top spot on lap five. A battle for the third position between John Materas and Corey Hutchings got too hot as Materas spun in turn four to bring out the caution. Hutchings was sent to the tail end of the field for his involvement in the incident.
The man on the move was on the restart was Rick Gentes, who made his way by Oliveira. Shortly after, Oliveira saw his strong run come to an end after brushing the wall in turn two on lap 12. After a stop on pit road under green, Oliveira was able to rejoin the field.
The best race on the track was for the third position between Jay Stuart and Jeff Zuidema. After a short battle, Zuidema moved by Stuart and into third. The final run to the checkers was uneventful with O’Sullivan cruising to the victory over his rival Rick Gentes. Zuidema, Stuart, and Wayne Coury, Jr. completed the top five.
Brian Sullivan of S. Windsor, CT, returned to victory lane in the TIS Modifieds. For the second week in a row John Studley looked like the man to beat but a late race pass denied him a victory yet again. Studley led from the drop of the green flag holding of the likes of Leo Oliveira and RJ Marcotte in the early going.
Oliveira and Marcotte, running second and third, tangled on lap eight to bring out one of several cautions in the event. Back under green, a handful of racers who had problems early, rebounded to become part of the action at the head of the pack. Glenn Boss, Sullivan and Cam McDermott had entered the top five. Studley got some breathing room when Richie Ferreira and Sullivan began to do battle.
Sullivan was able to take the away the runner-up spot on lap 15. He quickly reeled in Studley. A pass for the lead was negated by an incident that involved Oliveira. After two green flag laps, Sullivan was able to take the lead once again. Sullivan went on to claim the victory over Studley, McDermott, Boss and Bart Ramos.
Scott Sundeen of Douglas, MA, topped a strong field of Limited Sportsmen to score his second win of the season. Not since early in the season, has Sundeen visited victory lane in the Limited Sportsman division. The patriarch of the Douglas Racing family has been strong all year but has shut out of victory lane since May. The run was anything but easy as Sundeen had his hands full with a charging Larry Barnett. Barnett waited until late in the race but applied real pressure over the final laps of the race. Last week’s winner Chris “Moose” Douton crossed the line in third but was later disqualified in post race inspection. Paul Coutu, Jr., Jay Sundeen and Kevin Bowe completed the top five.
Tim Taylor of Wauregan, CT, ran to his sixth victory of the season in the Mini Stock main event. If anything could overshadow Taylor’s victory it may have been the run of his son Nate. The start of the event found point leader Brad Caddick in control. A restart early in the event proved to be his undoing as mechanical failure cost Caddick the top spot. The caution flew when Caddick came to rest in turn one. On the ensuing restart, Randy Churchill had inherited the lead. His teammate Taylor quickly asserted himself as the new leader. Churchill would not give up and dogged Taylor to the checkers. Scott Michalski finished third over Chuck Rogers and Jeff Moffat. Nate Taylor came home sixth after starting in the 23rd position. It was a proud night for the Taylor family.

Scarborough, ME – August 2, 2009 – The Pro Four Modifieds of New England (PFMNE) completed their eighth race as part of the Four Cylinder Nationals, sponsored by Kraze Korlacki Speed Equipment, at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Sunday. It was the #1m of “Stormin’ Norman” Wrenn that thundered his way from last to victory lane for the seventh time this year.
The series gridded a 15-car field for the 39-lap feature—in honor of the PFMNE’s 39th anniversary. In what was to be his first appearance of the season, the #00 of Dave Richardi was unable to complete his heat or return for the feature when his machine encountered mechanical difficulties. The same held true for the #83 of Franky Perry and the #68 of Eric Trask as well.
Taking the green flag was the #11a of Dan Meservey and the #13 of George Sherman in the front row. The #29 of Matt Sagar, who started in fifth, worked his way passed the #07x of Robin Berghman and the #12 of Rob Richardi, Jr. on the inside. On lap two, Sherman took the lead away from Meservey. Meanwhile, at the back of the pack, the #10 of Brian Vincent and Wrenn’s #1m worked their way through the traffic, passing under the #07 of Phil Lausier in the process. One lap later, Sagar drove his machine around Meservey and Sherman to become the new race leader. The #4 of Cory Cleary started in 10th and made his way through the field, passing Berghman on lap 4, with Wrenn close behind. Five laps into the event, Richardi Jr. saw an opportunity and took it—passing Sherman on the frontstretch for the bridesmaid position. Wrenn moved into third after racing side-by-side with Sherman.
A caution came out on lap twelve, when Cleary, Meservey, and Lausier spun in turns three and four. On the restart, Sagar exploded into the lead with Wrenn following in the low groove from his third place restarting position. Within two laps, Vincent passed Berghman for seventh, and Bedard began closing in on the #07x also. It was on this same lap that Richardi Jr. slowed on the fronstretch, bringing his Richardi Automotive machine to the pits after it began billowing smoke.
The caution came out for the second time on lap twenty-one when Sagar spun. On the restart, Wrenn and Vincent held the first and third positions, but when the green flag unfurled, they roared passed Cleary, who had restarted in second. On the backstretch, Sagar—who had to start at the end of the lead lap cars—powered under Berghman for a spot in the top five. But that glory was short-lived when he was forced pit-side with mechanical failure. With fourteen laps to go, Bedard and Crawford kept up their battle in the middle of the pack, but Bedard continued to hold the advantage.
Wrenn, Vincent, and Cleary made up a close top three going into the final ten laps of the feature event. When the two-to-go signal was shown, Cleary made his move under Vincent for second. When the white flag unfurled, Crawford made his move around Bedard. In turns three and four, however, Cleary spun before he reached the checkered flag; he was able to get it going again and cross the line. Wrenn took home the win, followed closely by Vincent and Cleary to round out the top three. Berghman; Lausier; Crawford; Bedard; D’Amico; Mertz; Meservey; Sagar; Richardi, Jr.; Sherman; and Eric McGovern rounded out the top ten. Crawford was the first Limited driver to cross the finish line, and Bedard and Mertz rounded out the top three.
The PFMNE have a week off, but will return to racing on Saturday, August 15, at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, NH.

Barre, VT – Tony Andrews of Northfield captured his third career win in the Late Model stock car division at Thunder Road International Speedbowl. Andrews win on WDEV/Calkins Night featuring “King” Richard Petty is his first since 1992. Andrews started on the outside pole and held off a strong Brooks Clark throughout the race to score the win. Dave Pembroke finished second and unofficial took over the points lead. Cris Michaud came home third followed by Brooks Clark and Phil Scott to complete the top five. John Donahue finished sixth, Mike Bailey seventh, previous point leader Jean-Paul Cyr eighth, Doug Murphy ninth and Trampas Demers rounding out the top ten.
The first caution in the NAPA Tiger Sportsmen feature came with two laps remaining and setup a shootout between rookie Steve “Mudflap” Quenneville of Barre and Josh Demers of Middlesex. Both drivers were fighting for their first career win in the Tiger Sportsmen division. Demers prevailed on the outside for his first career NAPA Tiger Sportsmen win. Quenneville would hold on to finish third after Tom Therrien also got by him on the final lap. Lance Allen and John Drinkwine came home fourth and fifth followed by Joey Laquerre, Tony Rossi, Jeff French, Ricky Roberts and Scott Coburn filling the sixth through tenth positions.
Tommy “Thunder” Smith of Williamstown won his second Allen Lumber Street Stock feature event of the 2009 season with a last lap pass with a photo finish at the line. Smith just edged out Jason Corliss for the win. Coming home third was Bunker Hodgdon. Marcus Farnham and Bruce Melendy took home top five finishes. Sixth through tenth was filled by David LaFleche, Michael MacAskill, Travis Hull, Jason Allen, and point leader Gary Mullen.
Williamstown’s Lance Donald scored his first career win in the Power Shift Junkyard Warrior Feature. He started sixth and fought past Keith Fortier for the win. Fortier would hold onto second followed by Kevin Wheatley, Ken Christman, and Kevin Dodge rounded out the top five. Point leader Donnie Yates came home sixth, Alex Whitcomb seventh, Justin Town eighth, Bryan Nykiel ninth and Cheryl Kingsbury captured a top ten in her first time out.
NAPA Tiger Sportsmen driver James Hebert took home the golden toilet seat with his win in the infamous Porta-Potty Grand Prix. Hebert and crew legged out Late Model driver Jean-Paul Cyr, Power Shift Junkyard Warrior Donnie Yates and Allen Lumber Street Stock competitor Gary Mullen. However, Mullen didn’t go home empty handed as he claimed the golden plunger award for the prettiest potty.
The Allen Lumber Street Stocks and the Power Shift Junkyard Warriors will be back in action this Sunday, August 2 as part of the M&M Beverage Enduro card. The Street Stocks will run a 50 lap special while the Junkyard Warriors will run a two segment Monza style event before the 25th Annual M&M Beverage Enduro 250. This year’s Enduro winner will receive $5,000 as part of Thunder Road International Speedbowl’s 50th Anniversary Season. Post time will be 6:00pm.
The Tiger Sportsmen are also in action this weekend as they visit Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH on Saturday, August 1 for the second event on the Tiger Sportsmen Tri-State Series. Post time will be at 6:00 pm.
All four Thunder Road stock car divisions will be back in action next Thursday, August 6 for NAPA Auto Parts Night. Along with the four divisions will be a Run-Whatcha-Brung featuring everyday race fans in their everyday vehicles. Post time is set for 6:30pm.

Taylor Top in the Mini Marquee; Wrenn, Materas, Douton & Tagg Winners
Thompson, CT (July 30, 2009): Blue skies finally dawned on Thompson Speedway for a thrilling night of NASCAR All-American Series racing action on Thursday Night. With a make-up event on the schedule, Hitchcock Racing Teammates Woody Pitkat of Stafford, CT, and Kerry Malone of Needham, MA, shared Sunoco Modified honors. Tim Taylor of Wauregan, CT, continued his winning ways in the Mini Stocks as they shared the spotlight with the Sunoco Modifieds with a 30-lap main event.
In full-fendered action, Norm Wrenn of Nashua, NH, bested a great field of veteran competitors to take down an eventful Super Late Model feature event. John Materas of Voluntown, CT, earned his second win of the season in a caution-free Late Model main event. Chris “Mouse” Douton of Waterford, CT, scored the Limited Sportsman victory after a spirited battle. Brian Tagg of Oxford, MA, ran to his second victory of the season in the TIS Modified.
Woody Pitkat of Stafford, CT, ended his winless streak at Thompson with a victory in the 30-lap make-up feature originally scheduled for June 11. It had been nearly a year since Pitkat had graced victory lane at the Thompson oval. His last win came on July 31, 2008. Rowan Pennink’s stay at the front of the first feature was short-lived as Pitkat and Jimmy Blewett made quick work of the early leader. Rocco had worked his way into third and took the second spot away from Blewett before the caution flew on lap four for a spin by Ricky Shawn.
On the restart, Pitkat retained his spot at the head of the field. Rocco applied immediate pressure as Tim Sullivan ran strong in third. The lead duo was locked in a side-by-side battle for the lead for several laps with Rocco taking the advantage to complete lap nine. Christopher moved into the fourth position while Blewett had faded. On lap 12, Sullivan watched his great run come to an end when he received the consolation flag for leaking fluid. Up front, Rocco continued to lead Pitkat by a narrow margin. A spin by Jodi Johnson brought out the caution and slowed the action.
Christopher rocketed into second spot on the lap 16 restart and was making a bid for the lead when the caution flew for an incident that involved Kerry Malone and Bert Marvin. A bobble by Rocco on the ensuing restart opened the door for the outside row of Pitkat and Ceravolo. Pitkat took over the top spot once again.
After another quick caution, Rocco regained his composure on the restart to make his way back into the second spot. Danny Cates had moved into third over Christopher and Ceravolo. A handful of laps later, Pitkat continued to lead Rocco, Christopher, Cates, and Ceravolo inside the top five. Blewett ran just outside the top five.
The complexion of the race changed drastically on lap 24 when Rocco made hard contact with the outside wall in turn two. Christopher was put to the tail end of the field for his involvement. The remaining six laps were uneventful for Pitkat, who run uncontested to the checkers. Cates drove to a runner-up finish followed by Blewett, Ceravolo, and Eric Goodale.
In the night capper, Rowan Pennink led the field to green with Kerry Malone in tow. After thrashing to get their car race-ready, Keith Rocco was ready to race; moving from sixth to third in the opening lap. His move to the front was negated when apparent mechanical failure put Danny Cates into the outside wall.
Malone was able to take over the top spot on the restart. Malone was immediately able to get some distance from second-running Pennink. After slight contact, Rocco was able to move past Christopher. Christopher immediately fell into the clutches of Jimmy Blewett. The earlier winner on the evening, Pitkat headed to pit road with mechanical failure to end his night.
The battle for the second position was heating up. Ceravolo began applying pressure to Pennink while Rocco lay in wait. Ceravolo got underneath Pennink on lap 13 to take over second. Rocco was able to follow through to move into third.
A scary looking incident on lap 15 saw Ricky Shawn spin; coming to rest in the groove. Dave LaCroix, with nowhere to go, t-boned the Shawn’s #8. Both drivers were able to walk away.
On the restart, Malone opted to restart in the outside groove and resumed his lead. Christopher got a run on the outside moving into the second position. Rocco was third followed by Eric Goodale. Ceravolo fell back to fifth after the restart. Ceravolo began to claw his way back getting by Goodale for fourth.
On the final stretch run to the checkers Malone was able to extend his lead to five car lengths over Christopher. Rocco trailed Christopher by a similar margin. Ceravolo ran in a distant fourth. There was a great battle for the fifth position between Goodale and Pennink. Malone cruised under the checkers to take his first victory of the season. Christopher came home second ahead of Rocco, Ceravolo and Goodale.
Tim Taylor of Wauregan, CT, scored his fifth Mini Stock victory of the season in the division’s marquee event. The Mini Stock 30-lap extra-distance race was highlighted by a tremendous battle between father and son, Tim and Nate Taylor. Son Nate held the top spot in the early going; fending off his father. The son was able to hold off his father until lap 12, when Tim pulled ahead to take the lead. The youngster remained within striking distance of this father.
At halfway, Scott Michalski had run down the lead duo. A little farther back in the pack, the field was looking racy. Randy Churchill, who had dogged Jeff Moffat for much of the race, was able to steal the spot way on lap 16. Ron Rixham was working over Chuck Rogers.
Up front, Michalski was able to take away the runner-up position from N. Taylor. He immediately set sail for leader T. Taylor. With less than ten laps to go, Michalski was glued to the back bumper of T. Taylor. On lap 23, Michalski got alongside Taylor, to no avail. Over the final two laps, all Michalski could do was chase Taylor to the checkers. N. Taylor finished a solid third ahead of Churchill and Moffat.
Norm Wrenn of Nashua, NH, led the closing laps of a suspenseful Super Late Model main event. George Bessette battled with pole sitter Jay Macedonio in the opening laps of the event to take the early lead. He had moved out to a sizable advantage as Ricky Fuller, Wrenn, Macedonio, Mike O’Sullivan and Derek Ramstrom jockeyed for position.
An incident involving Jeff Hartwell and Steve Desmarais brought out the first caution at lap 14. On the restart, Fuller was able to get the advantage over Bessette to take over the lead. Wrenn and O’Sullivan were also able to get by Bessette. The night turned from bad to worse for Bessette as contact with Ramstrom sent both cars pit side for service. Both were able to continue.
Two aborted attempts at a restart found Fuller on the receiving end of the black flag for starting before the designated area. The ensuing restart pitted O’Sullivan and Norm Wrenn on the front row. Before the battle could really develop, another quick caution flew for an incident involving Larry Gelinas and Les Rose.
Finally back under green, Wrenn motored out to the lead over O’Sullivan. But the show was Rick Fuller, who restarted 14th. He was inside the top-five and looking for more with five laps remaining. Wrenn and O’Sullivan went nose-to-tail. Fuller was pressuring Ramstrom for the third spot. On the final lap, Fuller had to settle back in line. In the end, Wrenn was able to score his first victory of the season over O’Sullivan. Ramstrom rebounded from his early race woes to finish on the podium. Fuller settled for fourth over the legendary Mike Stefanik, who took over driving duties from Jeff Zuidema in the #19.
John Materas of Voluntown, CT, won his second Late Model feature win of the season in fine fashion on Thursday night. The race featured an early battle between Materas and Mark Oliveira with the eventual winner making his move into the top spot on lap four.
The action was a little deeper in the pack as Jeff Zuidema, Jay Stuart and Rick Gentes waged a tremendous battle for the fourth position. On several occasions, the battle went three-wide. Contact between Stuart and Zuidema opened the door for Gentes, who briefly took over the fifth spot. Zuidema battled back to regain the spot. Stuart got a bit of breathing room as Zuidema settled back into the fifth ahead of Gentes.
Back up front, Materas was able to stretch his advantage as O’Sullivan had reeled in Oliveira. For several laps, just after half-way, O’Sullivan was able to get up along side Oliveira. The battle between Stuart and Zuidema began to heat up again. Zuidema got up along side Stuart on lap 19; he was able to take the spot away on lap 20.
Oliveira and O’Sullivan were able to cut into Materas’ lead in the final stages of the event. But the Voluntown, CT racer was not to be denied as Materas took down the victory by two car lengths over Oliveira. O’Sullivan settled for the third spot over Zuidema and Stuart.
Chris “Mouse” Douton of Waterford, CT, scored his first win of the 2009 season in a Limited Sportsman thriller. The Limited Sportsman main event had the crowd on their feet as Douton and Joe Arena put on a tremendous duel for the top spot.
Eighth starting Arena had run down Douton, who had taken the lead in the early going after starting fifth. The two went door-to-door with Douton retaining his lead by a bumper over Arena. The two resumed their fierce battle after a restart on lap nine. Paul Coutu, Jr. ran in the third spot. Larry Barnett found himself boxed in by the Sundeen Family with Jay holding the fourth spot while father Scott battled with Barnett for fifth from the outside groove.
Both Jay and Scott Sundeen were able to move by Coutu. J. Sundeen began to run down the lead duo. With five laps remaining Barnett was able to grab the fifth spot from Coutu. In the closing laps, J. Sundeen made it three wide in the quest for the top spot.
After battling side-by-side, Arena finally nosed ahead to lead lap 18. Once again, Jay Sundeen stuck his nose three wide. On the lap 19, Douton was able to gain a slight advantage once again.
J. Sundeen trying to be the spoiler once again made it three –wide on the backstretch. The move opened the door for Douton to take the top spot all to himself. Douton motored to the victory over Arena. Jay Sundeen bested his father Scott while Barnett completed the top five.
Brian Tagg of Oxford, MA, is proving to be one of the powerhouses in the TIS Modified division with his second victory in three races. John Studley was looking to be the sixth different winner this season in the TIS Modified division. Studley set out from the pole position and let the lion’s share of the main event.
After working his way up from his fifth starting position, Tagg caught the leader on lap 15. He was able to get underneath Studley exiting turn two on lap 17. Tagg sailed under the checkers for his second win of the season; becoming only the second driver to double-up. Studley had a career performance to finish second ahead of Cam McDermott. Glenn Boss and RJ Marcotte completed the top five.
