Trampas Demers Snags Times Argus Mid-Season Championship

Barre, VT – South Burlington’s Trampas Demers snagged the Late Model win during the double-point Times Argus Mid-Season Championships at Thunder Road on Thursday, July 17. Demers came from deep in the field to beat Scott Dragon in the closing laps of the 75 lap event. Demers came from the 14th starting position to claim his seventh career feature win.

Dragon led most of the second half of the event but had to settle for second as Demers beat him by half a car length at the checkered flag. Lance Allen completed the podium. Dave Pembroke and Nick Sweet worked their way from the back of the field through heavy traffic to complete the top five. Josh Demers, Eric Badore, Derrick O’Donnell, Kyle Pembroke and Emily Packard completed the top ten.

Stone Back On Top Entering Devil’s Bowl Mid-Season Championships

Todd Stone of Middlebury, VT is back on top of the Bond Auto Parts Modified standings heading into Friday's Rutland Herald Mid-Season Championships at Devil's Bowl Speedway. (Alan Ward photo)Late Model, Renegade leaders ahead by only one point; Driver autograph session scheduled

WEST HAVEN, VT – Stock car racer Todd Stone is in a familiar position entering Friday’s Rutland Herald Mid-Season Championships at Devil’s Bowl Speedway: Out front.  The Middlebury, VT driver dominated the Bond Auto Parts Modified division in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action last season and though he holds the lead again this summer, his climb to the top hasn’t been as easy as it was a year ago.

In contrast to 2013 – when Stone won 10 of 17 races and only four other drivers carried the checkered flag during the season – parity has been the name of the game this year with seven different winners in the first 10 events. Stone’s 33-point lead on Leon Gonyo is far from safe with double points on the line at the Rutland Herald Mid-Season Championships; the main event pays a whopping 100 points for the victory, setting the stage for a potentially huge momentum shift.  Joey Roberts, Vince Quenneville, Jr., and Ron Proctor are also well within striking distance of Stone’s lead. Nick Sweet Wins Second Vermont Governor’s Cup 150

Barre’s Nick Sweet celebrates his VT Governor’s Cup 150 win in victory lane. (Photo by Alan Ward)Barre, VT – Barre’s own Nick Sweet won the 35th annual Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 presented by VP Small Engine Fuel in dominant fashion at Thunder Road on Thursday, July 10. Sweet led every step of the way and lapped over half the field in the process. NASCAR star Clint Bowyer spun just after halfway in the 150-lap event and went down a lap late in the race. He finished 14th, the first car down one lap.

Two-time “King of the Road” Sweet earned the pole position with a +3 the unique Plus/Minus handicap system. Derrick O’Donnell started third on the 31 car starting field and kept Sweet insight throughout the event but couldn’t quite get to Sweet as they worked heavy lapped traffic for the majority of the event. It was Sweet’s first win of 2014 and his 12th all-time at Thunder Road.

Scott Prepares for VT Governor’s Cup at Thunder Road

Phil Scott (14VT) is ready for the Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 presented by VP S.E.F., one of the few events he has yet to win during his storied career at Thunder Road. (Photo by Alan Ward)Barre, VT – The Lt. Governor of the State of Vermont, Phil Scott from Middlesex, VT, has won more races than any other driver in the history of the ACT Late Model division at Thunder Road, dating back to 1992. For over twenty years he has compiled a winning record that may never be broken.

Ironically, Phil Scott has never won the Vermont Governor’s Cup. He served the State of Vermont as a Senator from Washington County for a decade, and currently is preparing to run for a third term as Lt. Governor.

Although he has not hoisted the elusive Governor’s Cup, Scott has won just about every other major race, including two Milk Bowls (billed as the “Toughest Short Track Race in America”), the Memorial Day Classic, the Merchants Bank opening day event, and twenty-five (25) other feature events. He has won three “King of the Road” season-long track Championship titles. He also won 9 major American Canadian Tour events in a span of just four years from 1997- 2000!

Thunder Road Point Battles Heat Up

Sweet O'DonnellBarre, VT – As the heart of summer nears, the title hunts in all three stock car racing divisions at Thunder Road International Speedbowl are heating up. Just two events remain before the double-point Mid-Season Championships, beginning with the Northfield Savings Bank event this Thursday, July 3.

Two-time “King of the Road” Nick Sweet of Barre and defending “King of the Road” Derrick O’Donnell of North Haverhill, NH are door handle-to-door handle at the top of the Late Model standings. The pair is separated by just one point and surprisingly both drivers are still looking for their first wins of the season.

Right behind the former champions are John Donahue, Jason Corliss and Cody Blake who are all within striking distance of their first career titles. Two more former champions in Dave Pembroke and Phil Scott also sit less than twenty points out of the lead.
