ST. CLAIRE IS IN THE AIR: LATE MODEL DIVISION WINS KEPT IN THE FAMILY
BY: SOPHIE GABRION, RACE MEDIA REP
WISCASSET, MAINE – Last Saturday night marked the anniversary of some important historical events. In 2007, Honda produced the six millionth Civic. The 1996 US Women’s Gymnastics team brought home the first gold; Vanessa Williams was the first winner in pageant history to resign in 1984; and deep in the heart of Lincoln County, Wiscasset Speedway opened in 1969. For 47 years, it has operated as Maine’s fastest track. Even though drivers showed up wearing fire suits instead of their birthday suits, each division had obviously come to party.
In an epic Late Model Sportsman double-header, the St. Clair Family from Liberty kept winning relative. Josh of the #33 took first in the rescheduled race, while his grandfather, Dave, won in the second. Sponsored by Kennebec Equipment Rental, the Outlaw Minis rocked a 75-lap Madness Spotlight Feature where Zach Audet of the #19me proved hard work pays off when he accepted first place in victory lane. Other winners included Ben Tinker of the #19 from New Gloucester for the NAPA Modified and Kyle Hewins of the #51 from Leeds for the Strictly Streets.

HUDSON, NC (July 22) – Mt. Airy, NC’s John Smith and Burt Myers battled side-by-side for the final 16 laps as Smith edged ahead at the finish for his third straight Southern Modified Racing Series (SMRS) Presented By PASS win Friday night at Tri-County Motor Speedway.
“This is one of the best racetracks we go to, I wish we could race here every week,” said Smith in victory lane. “Burt [Myers] was pinching me off and he was doing what he needed to do to keep me down there, but I had such great forward drive. We raced side-by-side and I don’t think we ever touched each other. What a day.”
For the third time this year, Brandon Ward was able to capture the Precision Built Spindles Pole Award with a lap of 15.252 seconds (98.190 MPH). But, after the top four qualifier redraw, Smith would slot into the pole position, while Ward would move back to the third starting position.

Eric Badore celebrates his victory in the Thunder Road Late Model Feature on Fairpoint Communications Night. (Alan Ward photo)
Barre, VT – Scott Dragon of Milton literally caught Nick Sweet of Barre at the finish line to capture the makeup of the rained-out Governor’s Cup, and Eric Badore of Milton took advantage of rookie Marcel Gravel’s late-race misfortune to earn the Thunder Road Late Model feature on Fairpoint Communications Night.
Sweet dominated for most of the Governor’s Cup, running away from the 29-car field from the pole position at the green flag to take the lead, which he held for the first 136 laps of the 150-lap event. Dragon got better as the race went on, moving into the top 3 on lap 115, then claiming second place on the 128th lap, then moving in front on a lap 141 restart.
Sweet went back in front three laps after that restart following the fourth caution of the race. Dragon continued the chase, caught Sweet coming out of turn 4 on the final lap, then finished 1/100th of a second in front of Sweet as the two drivers made contact at the finish line.

Former Whelen Modified Tour driver Renee Dupuis, returns to home track, Thompson Speedway
(THOMPSON, CT) – A familiar name returned to Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 9 in the Sunoco Modified division. Renee Dupuis was back behind the wheel on the track she calls home for the first time in five years, in the #90 car, owned by Ed Bennett. She has run with Ed Bennett and his team for years, last racing on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in the very same chassis that she raced at Thompson less than two weeks ago. Although disappointed that the race was postponed due to weather, the team is looking forward to finishing up the last half of the season strong.
In her years racing on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Dupuis broke records for women, and made a name for herself, in one of the top NASCAR touring divisions in the country. She is still the highest qualifying and finishing female driver in the 30+ year series (both North and South Modified Tours) history. She has also made an effort to work with young women drivers and help them excel in motorsports, working with Lyn St. James’ Women in the Winner’s Circle program.

If you are lucky enough to be one of forty drivers taking the green flag in a NASCAR Sprint Cup race, you know all your hard work, sacrifice, and determination has paid off. For the third year in a row, Eddie MacDonald has been one of the fortunate forty as the driver of the Go Fas Racing #32 Ford Fusion owned by Old Orchard Beach resident Archie St. Hilaire. Eddie Mac’s participation again in the New Hampshire 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 17 is the result of a number of New England businesses pooling resources to sponsor the ride for the Rowley, Mass. veteran racer.
“This is an incredible experience for me to be able to compete on racing’s biggest stage and I am forever grateful for the local businesses that made this possible,” said Eddie Mac. “Archie St. Hilaire has been a long-time friend and does everything he can to get me on the track. He and his son Mason gave me my first Xfinity experience a number of years ago and are responsible for my three years running in the Cup series at Loudon. You could not ask for better people and they make it so much fun.”

NAPLES, ME (July 21) – For only the second time this season, the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Models and the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models will compete together in Twin 150s as they headline the “Summer Showdown In The Mountains” at White Mountain Motorsports Park. This weekend will also mark the first time PASS has competed at the tight, quarter-mile confines which are located in North Woodstock, NH since May, 2014.
One driver who will be very busy this weekend will be homestate favorite Joey Polewarczyk. Joey Pole, as he is known by his fans, will be seeking his first career PASS North Super Late Model win, while also fielding an entry for the ACT Late Model event for his development driver, Ryan Olsen.
“We felt pretty strong about our car at White Mountain before the PASS race that was rained out in June and we feel like we keep improving on our Super Late Model program,” says Polewarczyk, driver of the Pole’s Automotive #97. “We are still searching for our first PASS win and White Mountain would be the perfect place. It’s small, fast, and very racy, so I think it will be very exciting.”

Lee, NH – Rookie EKeys4cars Supermodified driver Dave Helliwell of Pelham continued his impressive freshman campaign on Friday night at Lee USA Speedway, taking down his third NASCAR Whelen All American Series feature event win of 2016 at “New Hampshire’s Center of Speed”.
Jim Lindquist was on hand representing Whelen Engineering for the annual Whelen Night festivities, and he presented Helliwell and all the other weekly division winners with their trophies, and Helliwell with a special medallion commemorating his win.
Helliwell gridded seventh for the 30-lap main event, and wasted little time starting his charge to the front, cracking the top five just two circuits in. Mike Keddy of Raymond was out front setting the early pace, with Tilton driver Jim Lowrey, Jr. in tow for the first eight laps.
